Chapter 20
This was already the third day that Yu Su had accompanied Chi Yanxing to work. At first, the company’s employees had been in utter shock, but now they had gradually come to accept it as normal.
Their big boss had been in an exceptionally good mood lately, and the employees had been reaping the benefits.
“Another round of desserts?”
“Yeah,” someone pointed upstairs. “That one likes sweets, so President Chi just went ahead and treated the whole company to afternoon tea.”
“I’m jealous.”
“Snap out of it. That little omega from the Xu family only left three days ago.”
“…Don’t remind me. I’ve never seen a little white lotus look that humiliated before.”
“Exactly. Let’s just go about our business. I’m just waiting for the boss to get married so I can chip in for the wedding gift. And then when the boss’s spouse has a baby, I’ll pitch in for the full-month celebration. I heard that Young Master Xu thought he could compete with his 60% compatibility, but he got completely humiliated when faced with a perfect 100%. The scene was beyond awkward.”
“Three days later, and I still can’t believe such a high-tier alpha actually found a perfect match… In Haicheng, aside from our boss, there are other high-society alphas, but the highest compatibility they’ve found is only 90%. Even that would have them celebrating with fireworks. Our boss really hid this well.”
“You fool. The more elite an alpha, the stronger their possessiveness. The fact that our boss is willing to bring his omega out in public is honestly shocking.”
“So the real question is… why did he bring him out at all?”
–
Yu Su, who had only managed to go out because he clung to his alpha, waved his hand dismissively. “Go on, go on. Don’t worry about me. I’ve already forgotten half the movie.”
Chi Yanxing frowned. “An omega’s fear response can last up to a week. You were terrified just a few days ago—how are you suddenly fine?”
Yu Su twirled his fingers. “Eh, I just kinda forgot about it. The whole thing was pretty slow this time. If I don’t want to remember something, I can forget it in just a few minutes.”
Chi Yanxing’s eyes narrowed. “So the shortest is a few minutes, and the longest is… a few days?”
Yu Su thought about it. Memories and emotions were complicated things. Chi Yanxing probably wouldn’t figure out his secret identity, and he didn’t want to lie too often, so he said, “Ah… not exactly.”
Chi Yanxing didn’t move, clearly waiting for a proper explanation.
Yu Su hesitated before continuing, “Lately… I keep recalling things from the past. I can’t say for sure how I process emotions, but the most vivid memory I have is from when I lost something I really liked as a kid. It took me half a year to get over it.”
Recalling the past? Could it be that Yu Su’s memory was gradually returning? Chi Yanxing was slightly surprised.
“If it took you half a year, it must’ve been a big regret,” he said casually. “So how did you finally forget about it?”
Yu Su scratched his head. “I think… I sang a song to myself? Maybe? It’s been so long I don’t really remember.”
Singing…?
Chi Yanxing caught onto another detail he hadn’t known before. If Yu Su was so good at singing that he could lose himself in it, then why had he never sung in front of him?
“You’ve never told me you could sing.”
Yu Su blinked. “Huh? I haven’t?”
“No, you haven’t,” Chi Yanxing confirmed.
Only then did Yu Su remember that he had once considered singing Chi Yanxing to sleep, but the idea had died before he had a chance to act on it.
“That’s your fault!”
Chi Yanxing feigned surprise. “What does this have to do with me?”
Yu Su crossed his arms and lifted his chin. “If you had let me move in earlier, you would’ve known already! I was planning to sing to you every night! Not to brag, but if I want someone asleep by midnight, there’s no way they’d last until 3 AM!”
Chi Yanxing: “…”
Are you singing a lullaby or a soul-reaping chant?
But Yu Su’s words intrigued him even more. He suddenly said, “Then what if I agree to let you move in now?”
The omega’s face visibly showed a layer of disdain.
“What’s past is past, and now is now. Even if you look handsome and smell nice, I’m not going over there now. To be honest, your room… it’s kinda ugly.” Yu Su gestured slightly with his pinky finger.
Chi Yanxing: “……”
The rejected alpha seriously started considering the possibility of blue walls and gold bedding.
Seeing the man standing at the door for a long time, Yu Su couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t you going to work?”
Chi Yanxing snapped out of it, glanced at Yu Su with a somewhat complicated expression, and replied, “I’m going.”
–
After nearly forgetting all about the Foam Mermaid, Yu Su’s mood had returned to normal. He lazed around in the CEO’s office for a while, but his naturally playful nature couldn’t be restrained, so he decided to go explore Chi Yanxing’s company.
For some reason, every morning when he arrived, he felt like countless pairs of eyes were watching him, but whenever he looked up, he saw nothing. Though curious, Yu Su had never actually gone downstairs.
“Who knows what these humans think of me? Maybe they see me as some kind of seductive little demon,” Yu Su muttered while maneuvering his wheelchair. “I’m a good fish—I never sing those songs that bewitch people… Hmm? What’s up ahead?”
The top floor was already sparsely populated, and ever since Yu Su—reeking of the sea—had arrived, the remaining employees wished they could turn invisible while working.
Thus, after traveling a short distance, Yu Su hadn’t encountered a single person. Instead, what appeared before him was a curved, transparent glass corridor, seemingly connecting two buildings.
“I’ve been coming here for days, and I never noticed this place before,” Yu Su said in surprise.
Having spent his whole life in the deep sea—essentially beneath the land—he had never seen such a seemingly suspended structure.
Unlike the completely open balcony he’d visited before, this walkway had glass walls on all sides. Everything was transparent, except for a single handrail installed on one side, presumably for the convenience of those with acrophobia.
Yu Su maneuvered his wheelchair forward, gliding toward the glass corridor. He leaned over slightly to look down. “My god… So I’ve been moving around at such a height every day? No wonder I can’t see the top in one glance.”
From here, even the figures below were almost indistinguishable.
Yu Su looked around—no one was in sight. This must be a viewing corridor, so no one came here during work hours.
Slowly, he rolled forward and reached out to touch the cold steel railing.
“Huh, this seems sturdy enough to hold me…”
The width and spacing were just right—maybe he could even use it to practice walking!
The thought excited him. He glanced behind him—no one was coming—so he felt emboldened. He braced himself on the wheelchair, exerted a little force, and stood up.
–
“Let’s go with this for now. Send a copy of the new proposal to Wen Bie and have him take it to Jian Rao Kong,” Chi Yanxing instructed, tapping his pen on the desk.
The person in charge quickly nodded and left. After the others had mostly cleared out, Chi Yanxing opened his computer, using a smart pen to jot down a few notes.
Once finished, he casually pulled up the wheelchair tracking system, only to find that Yu Su had gone to the glass corridor.
Chi Yanxing frowned slightly, then stood up and walked out.
Since the corridor was on the same floor, and not far from his location, he reached it in no time.
Standing at the entrance, the curved layout blocked his direct line of sight to the omega, so he stepped forward and called out, “Yu Su.”
No response.
Chi Yanxing didn’t stop this time. He strode deeper inside, and after rounding the bend that had obstructed his view, he finally saw the wheelchair—left behind.
But the person who should have been in it was nowhere to be found.
Chi Yanxing quickened his pace. A gust of wind, laced with a hint of coldness, suddenly swept in from the other side of the corridor. He rounded another bend and finally saw the figure that should have been in the wheelchair.
The slender omega was leaning slightly against the railing, hands bracing on the bar. Somehow, he had managed to hoist himself onto the handrail. His head was tilted back, resting against the glass wall, expression relaxed and carefree, as if savoring the sensation of being suspended in midair.
Chi Yanxing instinctively lightened his footsteps.
“Yu Su.”
This time, Yu Su heard him. Sunlight streamed in from behind him, casting a warm glow. His fine, soft hair was half bathed in familiar golden hues, while the other half shimmered like silver under the dazzling light.
Chi Yanxing watched as the omega’s eyelashes trembled slightly before lifting. The oceanic blue of his irises shimmered beneath the thin eyelids, finally settling on him.
There was a trace of drowsy confusion, mixed with a mesmerizing, almost bewitching brilliance.
The Alpha’s heart suddenly skipped a beat, as if something had struck him.
He didn’t speak again—just approached slowly, waiting for Yu Su to explain himself.
Still groggy from the sunlight, Yu Su only now realized that it was Chi Yanxing standing before him. He adjusted his posture and asked, “Why are you here? Finished work already?”
Chi Yanxing’s lips moved slightly. “That’s something I should be asking you—Yu Su, how did you get here alone? Did you… walk?”
Yu Su finally snapped back to full awareness. “Ah, well, I was planning to give you a surprise.”
“A surprise? The surprise that you can stand up?” Chi Yanxing said slowly.
Yu Su nodded excitedly. “I can even take a few steps.”
Chi Yanxing placed both hands on the railing, subtly enclosing Yu Su within his protective range. Suppressing the surge of emotions—whether excitement or something else—he tilted his head slightly and asked, “When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Yu Su chuckled sheepishly. “Well… remember when I fell in the room last time? That was the first time I realized I could stand without support, but I never got the chance to tell you…”
Although the words were left unspoken, Chi Yanxing already understood.
The reason Yu Su hadn’t had the chance to tell him was that, back then, he had been so furious that he had harshly lectured Yu Su about not acting recklessly. So at that time… was that why Yu Su had been so upset?
The unspoken surprise had been met with anger and reprimand—no wonder he had been so dejected.
Chi Yanxing’s sharp gaze softened slightly, and he lowered his voice. “You can really walk now? Have you fully recovered?”
Yu Su shook his head. “My legs still feel weak. I got here by holding onto the railing.”
“Do you know the reason?” Chi Yanxing asked.
Yu Su thought seriously for a moment before saying, “I was just thinking about that. At first, I thought it was just a matter of time, but that doesn’t seem to be it. So I have this really wild theory—but I need your help to prove it.”
Chi Yanxing’s eyes landed on Omega’s delicate chin, and as he looked upward, he saw those soft, rosy lips. Narrowing his gaze slightly, he said, “Tell me.”
Yu Su cleared his throat, raising his hands to brush his hair back on both sides of his neck. “Bite me, Chi Yanxing. I suspect it’s because of your pheromones.”
“The deep-sea pheromones I love the most.”
–Author’s note:
Chi Yanxing: Oh… so besides my face, my pheromones are also appealing…
